THE TRIANGLE PROJECT PART 8 - COPENHAGEN PHOTO FESTIVAL 2011

The Copenhagen Photo Festival had a visit by some of The Triangle Project's New York crew. The above painting by Anton Perich of Andrea Langdon was supposed to have been shown in Copenhagen along with several of Anton's other wonderful paintings:

 The above of Misha Sedwick, that is of course also a Hollywood Superstar and one of Anton's muses and can be found i films such as "The New Girl" on his own film site Anton Perich Films, where films with Kristina Korsholm also can be found.

The above is Anton Perich with his painting machine and painted portrait of Warren Fischer, who is one part of Fischer Spooner. Music Anton also listens to on high volume when he paints. Actually music is a very important part of Anton's painting process, often listening to for example his son Tristan Perich's work but can also be found listening to Danish Maya Albana.

The above painting of Croatian inventor Nikola Tesla (who has a book written about him where the theory was that he was from Mars) was planned to have hung at the Tesla Show Room in Copenhagen.
Instead photos of Tesla's shot in connection to The CO2 E - Race Project was shown in a slide-show on a large monitor, that also could be seen through the large windows by nigh crawlers on their way home down Bredgade close to the Queens Castle. It was decided to show something NEW from Anton, that had never been shown before and something rather unexpected and mysterious.

The above was the E - flyer and facebook invite for the exhibition that was hosted in the former Carsberg Beer Breweries in a space called "The Castle" with huge round golden mosaics spots on the face of the building.

The Danish daily newspaper Information had a very nice article about the work, where their editor Jens Christoffersen wrote (google translated from Danish) "In this series of pictures Anton has put his mouse Andrea in a dark room upstairs with giant photo developer liquid smeared on the floor with a sponge. Then he elucidates the paper with a flashlight around the naked body. After the image is produced, he has taken the process ednu one slip through to show the image again and then print the bill alleging that Andrea is the size of a barbie doll." While the Photograms was shown in Copenhagen, most of the above paintings was instead shown in Bushwick (Brooklyn) at a new underground space called Microscope Gallery, with great reviews and a screening of Anton's Muhammed Ali documentary as part of the exhibtion, at around the same time as the Copenhagen show was up.
A special issue of NIGHT Magazine was also released in this connection and for the first time in many years, Neke Carson was NOT included with his usual column called TIPS.

Neke Carson was however also shown in Copenhagen at the galley called DAMP run by a group of Copenhagen artists called AveVu, mentioned in a previous post. The above E invite (where it says "Above photograph from Debbie Harry's closet"), was for the exhibition that opened on Neke's birthday with a good party in collaboration with the next door artist run space. Check out the below video:




It was a lovely evening, lovely people, lovely performances and since the gallery was given many cases of Golden Beer of the strong kind, everyone had a large smile and a good time. As you can see in the above video, there was also a video installation in the basement with Neke playing freestyle self tought piano with his now classic "Inglorious Basterds Jazz Suite".

Just Right in time. Neke has said: “I always thought you had to be as far ahead as possible, but if you’re too far ahead, like Buckminster Fuller or Thelonious Monk, (continued below)

...it takes too long for people to catch up. You really need to be three years ahead and two years behind. Then you’ll be right on time.” Neke Carson’s “Portraits for the Closet” series was show in New York for the first time in 2009 and includes colorful, somewhat naughty and lush closet portraits of some of his friends, such as Debbie Harry, John Waters and Billy Name"

In the above photo from Billy Name's closet. After the exhibition was taken down, it was stored in the basement. The very same basement that was flooded during the heaviest rainstorm Copenhagen has seen in most mens memory. Now the damaged prints are called "The Copenhagen Edition" and has a whole new value to them along with a patina of Copenhagen history.

The above E flyer was for the exhibition "Mente du Person!" (Did you Mean Person) that was held at APART, a undercover secret gallery in loft on top of Hotel King Arthur. It was curated by Thomas Andersen and Tim Jørgensen, consisting of Copenhagen based artists using photography as a media in their work. In it, Yrs Truly showed work from 1999 (below), as a direct response to the title of the exhibition, relating to the response one sometimes gets from Google when you type in something it does not understand. And thinks you mean something else, when you don't.

It was nice to see that old image again, hanging on a wall in Copenhagen.

Another part of the Copenhagen Photo Festival was the "Vesterbro Street Exibition" that was organized by The Copenhagen Photo Cafe called Foto Cafeen and is on a corner of Vesterbrogade and Vesterbro Torg, a stone throw from the Red Light District of Copenhagen. Here the longest exhibition in Copenhagen was initiated and orchestrated on all the storefront windows of Vesterbrogade and the former shopping centre called Tove where a wide array of photos selected by a curator team in collaboration with Tony from Foto Cafeen.  One of the artists and photographers exhibiting in this project was another Triangle artist named Torben Dalhof. A painter, poet, teacher with a degree in Computer Science that has recently release his 4th poetry collection called "Pilgrim". The above photo installation still life was created during a yoga fasting period in the beginning of 2011. These are the visions and work he created in this connection.

According to Torben Dalhof, his images are: "Tribute to Bacchus, which show different ways of living and thinking in the modern world of today. We all have to show each others respect and love. One world many people and life is hard".

The above was the window installation at Foto Cafeen in 2010 when Victor Bockris had an exhibition there and Ali and Andy looked out over Vesterbro Torg for quite some time.

Plans for the The Triangle Project's involvement in 2012 Copenhagen Photo Festival includes bringing Istanbul photographers to the city. Through the Triangle Project connections have been made to several New School photographers, whole also exhibited in Part 4 of the project in Karsi Sanat.

AUTOTOPIA: Cars for a Better Tomorrow

Special Reception and CO2-Friendly Car Showcase on Sat., April 23 / 12-6pm

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, Exit Art is pleased to announce a celebration of CO2-friendly cars through an exhibition that documents its erratic history and an CO2-friendly car showcase. AUTOTOPIA: CARS FOR A BETTER TOMORROW, a project of SEA (Social Environmental Aesthetics), focuses on the history of the electric car in connection with political and environmental factors that have revolutionized the methods and technologies of transit.

The first electric car (above), made over 100 years ago, was invented soon after the combustion engine vehicle (the kind of engines we use today) was developed as a new way of powering automobiles. Today, electric cars must be seen as serious alternatives to the gasoline powered-vehicles that are depleting fossil fuel supplies, polluting the environment, and exacerbating our dependence on foreign oil. Cars are now being designed to enhance our lives – through the integration of digital communication systems – and improve our future, by providing a solution to our energy crisis. Wireless Internet allows vehicles to connect and share data on traffic patterns, intelligently coordinating movements and keeping drivers connected to social networks. The reinvention of the automobile, and the infrastructures that make it possible, will not be easy – but it will be essential.

The "E" tag over Manhattan

 The "E" tag magically also turned into the Twin Towers when isolated. It was from them the initial energy into the project came from, in trying to find an answer to why they were brought down.

This exhibition coincides with Earth Day, and is organized concurrently with the CO2 E-Race, the culminating event of New York City’s Earth Day celebration. Initiated in 2008, the CO2 E-Race (A Race for Climate Awareness) increases public awareness of global climate changes using CO2-friendly cars as a way to spread the message. The New York E-Race is a parade of CO2-friendly cars through the streets of Manhattan; connected to GPS devices, their route can be tracked online and on the Toshiba jumbo screen in Times Square. The “E” shape formed by the parade draws attention to Earth Day and CO2-friendly cars as the future of transportation, encouraging the public to “erase” climate change.

ELECTRIC CAR SHOWCASE - ONE DAY ONLY!

Saturday, April 23, 2011 / 12-6pm

Following the CO2 E- Race, Exit Art will exhibit several participating CO2-friendly cars in a showcase format. Tesla Motors will be showing an electric, zero-emissions Orange Roadster, which gets 245 miles per charge and goes from 0 to 60mph in 3.7 seconds. A converted Electric DeLorean (above) will also be on view, along with a Biofueled (E85) driven Ford Fusion FFV from the Danish company Novozymes.

2pm: Jacob Fuglsang Mikkelsen, the organizer and artist behind the CO2 E-Race/CO2 Green Drive, will give a brief talk about the origins of the project and the environmental issues it seeks to address.

Once again a new artist run art space opens up in Copenhagen. Basically it is the same people who ran the 2012 space in the Meat Packing District. One of them being Johan Ebbesen (who also previously ran Gallery Ebbesen on Amager), that in the 2012 space together with Thomas Andersen produced huge amounts of works there. Many of those ways of expression has been carried on into Mr. Ebbesen's solo show at DAMP. The man behind Dansk Luft & Apart, HC Smed, is also involved with this spot.

"Untitled" - Title for 12th Istanbul Biennial in 2011

The 12th İstanbul Biennial, organised by the İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts and sponsored by Koç Holding, is set for 17 September-13 November 2011, under the curatorship of Adriano Pedrosa and Jens Hoffmann.

Adriano Pedrosa is the founding director of Programa Independente da Escola São Paulo (PIESP) and Jens Hoffmann, director of the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco.

The press meeting of the 12th İstanbul Biennial was held on October 20, 2010, in Pera Palas Hotel, İstanbul. The co-curators, Mr. Adriano Pedrosa and Mr. Jens Hoffmann, together with the director, Mrs. Bige Orer, discussed the process of making the İstanbul Biennial. Their conversation addressed crucial questions related to the many biennials currently being realized around the globe, the current state of the İstanbul Biennial, the "Remembering İstanbul" conference, the educational program of the biennial, and the title they have chosen for the 12th edition. Pedrosa and Hoffmann explained their curatorial approach, which attempts to negotiate two seemingly opposing perspectives in contemporary art: art that is concerned purely with aesthetic and formal matters, and art that overtly addresses political and social subjects.

The title of the 12th İstanbul Biennial is "Untitled (12th İstanbul Biennial), 2011". 

The title and the visual identity refer to the work of the Cuban American artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Gonzalez-Torres is undoubtedly one of the most important artists of the last 25 years, and his work has been featured in numerous international group and solo shows (including the 5th International İstanbul Biennial in 1997, curated by Rosa Martinez). His minimalist, conceptual, formally innovative works-such as the date pieces, the jigsaw puzzles, the paper stacks, the candy spills, the light-bulb strings, the linguistic portraits, and the photographs-are all about aesthetic form, yet they are also about open-ended content, and they frequently address explicitly political subjects. While Gonzalez-Torres's work will not be displayed in the 12th İstanbul Biennial, his presence will be evoked in numerous subtle ways. "Untitled (12th İstanbul Biennial), 2011" references his particular conventions for titling his work; it also calls attention to a level of communication where language and representation, including names, places, dates, and titles, operate in more abstract and poetic ways. Through his works, Gonzalez-Torres demonstrated that the most successful political moves are ones that do not appear to be political, and that the personal is political and the political is personal.

Max's Kansas City - Art Imitating Life, Imitating Art - Curated by Jacob Fuglsang Mikkelsen

In the fall season of 2004, The exhibition called Max's Kansas City - Art Imitating Life, Imitating Art curated by Jacob Fuglsang Mikkelsen in collaboration with Yvonne Sewall Ruskin was shown at The Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, housed in the 13th Century Churh called Nikolaj in the center of Copenhagen. It was one of the first exchanges between Copenhagen and New York, as part of what later became The Triangle Project. The concept and shape of the Triangle had a large part in the design of the catalog that was designed in collaboration with Emilie Hasløv. The very fact that Dan Flavin's sculpture in the Red Back Room creates one large Triangle and two within itself is of course also of great inspiration. The above collage was created by Danish Graphic Designer Sten Jauer for Copenhagen's free newspaper called Citadel. Most of the images are taken by Anton Perich.

The re-creation of the Back Room with an original Dan Flavin Red Neon Triangle Sculpture with video's by Anton Perich and Ira Schnider. The sound from the video was connected to a speaker where a mirror was glued to the membrane on top of the room. Onto this this mirror, a laser was shot from high up in the tower of the church and down throughout the exhibition with several mirrors, finally hitting the mirror when the music that was playing in a loop ("All Tomorrows Parties" most of the time) made the membrane move, making the green beam of light bounce up into the vaulted ceiling, where in the center there was a fish fresco sculpture that danced with the vibrating laser. It was a little hello! to Billy Name who is also a fish. The laser installation was inspired by Frosty Myers laser installation that he made at Max's, that shot out of his studio window, down through Park Avenue South and finally hitting a mirror that was glued to the speaker membrane of the Juke Box inside.

Anton Perich's paintings of Andrea "Whips" Feldman, Candy Darling and Cyrinda Foxe Tyler done with his painting machine. The video on the monitor is of the painting machine painting the very same paintings, shot by Anton Perich in his NYC studio.

The "Girl Eating a Banana Dress" was made as a tribute to the "Max's Kansas City exibition" by Ann Charlotte Vengsgaard and as a part of a fashion-line-up and interactive catwalk performance. Anton Perich's print was on the front of the dress and he signed it "live" on the back of the model Sabine, as a part of a happening produced on the "Copenhagen Night of Culture". The same Night that Frosty Myers installed his Pyramid Light Sculpture over the Nikolaj Church and Maya Albana performed music from her album "God Bless Education".

The Frosty Myers Search Light Pyramid Sculpture over the Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, housed in the 13th Century Nikolaj Church. The Sculpture installation was specially designed for the Copenhagen City Night of Culture held each fall.

The above invitation for the 40th Anniversary event in 2005 held at the Hit Factory Studios that also houses Gibson Guitar Show Rooms. The project was also a fundraiser for Max's Kansas City Project, with an auction with art work by artists connected to Max's. The invite was designed by the Turkish artist and DJ Cansu Aybar, who is part of the  Istanbul Art Collective KOP ART. She was also later part of The Triangle Project as DJ Bang in both Istanbul and Copenhagen.

the Copenhagen Photo Festival there will be a daily program of
of Lectures, workshops, live performances, video screenings,
book and print signing events and a bookstore with books.

from 15 - 18 there will be artists talks, slideshows, book & print signing and workshops with:

- Marcia Resnick
Marcia Resnick is a legendary New York underground photographer and artists that first went to all the best art schools in the US and then into the New York Punk and underground scene. She has done some of the most personal and intimate portraits of other legends such as Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg, John Belushi Debbie Harry and William s. Burroughs and will talk about this and show her images during her lecture. As part of the photo festival, she is exhibiting her project "Re-Visions" that is conceptual images and constructions with a hint of a young girls rather naughty mind and some pre-post-feminism. It is better and edgier than Cindy Sherman and more clever and raw than Duane Michals. Marcia will also do a live photo shoot as part of the workshop and you will also be able to buy signed copies of her book and original prints.

- Victor Bockris
Victor Bockris is first and formost a writer who was tld by Andy Warhol that he
should also be a photograpeher. His images of Warhol and Ali are wonderful
and strange. Clash of the titans and totally Ying & Yang.
Victor will talk about his work as a writer and biographer of some of the
most important pop icons in modern time. He will also talk about that very
special day when Warhol met Ali for the first and last time.
You will also be able to buy signed copies of his books and original prints.

Ellen Jong comes from the New York underground art, music and club scene
of New York City. Brought up in Queens by Chinese parents, she started
shooting her surroundings and soon became part of the hip inner circle
of the Manhattan downtown art and fashion scene. She has shot for Magazines like VICE and also works as a stylist for several other photographers in the fashion world.
Her projects "Pees on Earth" and "Getting to Know My Husband's Cock"
are two post-post feminist statements that she will talk about and
show images from. You will also be able to buy signed copies of her
both books with the same titles.

At 19.00 a special dinner will be held at Building 55
with the Chef Mads Roach (formerly at Kofoed).
It is a dinner where the guests of honor are
Marcia Resnick & Victor Bockris.

A small exhibition at Hotel Fox with images of the legendary artist MUSE and Underground Queen Cyrinda Foxe Tyler (Tyler from her ex-husband Steven Tyler from Aerosmith)

It was Cyrinda who was inspiration for David Bowie's classic
