Turkish Heartbeats in the Copenhagen Nighlife

ATATÜRK DECLARES!

“Sirs, all of you can be a Member of Parliament, can be a Minister you can even be President of the Rebublic but you can not be artists. Let us esteem those children that have devoted their lives to a great art.”

and:

“A nation, when deprived of art and artists, can not have a complete life”

and:

“Developing art and national culture is the principal element to exalt the Nation”

Atatürk had pointed out the importance of Turkish art in the nation’s life, and emphasised that Turkish arts were to reach contemporary civilisatory levels by progressive efforts.

His principal ideal and desire for the Turkish Nation has a background steeped in art and culture and is to reach a proper level in art and culture.

and:

“It is necessary consider the people’s musical needs as well. Thorough training in music is necessary for the people to get used to western music and like it. “

and:

“Friends, I know how you want our young generation to be advance in all kinds of fine arts. That, it has been doing. But in my opinion, the Turkish music has priority and urgency in this respect. The measure for the transformation of the nation is to be perceived by the changes in music. The music that they dare us to listen to today is far something to take pride in. It is necessary to collect the high expression and statements of the nation expressing fine emotions and ideas, and to work on them within the general rules of music."

and on Culture:

"The foundation of The Republic of Turkey is culture. I don’t need to explain this expression here once more. This has been determined as the work done in the schools of the Turkish Republic in each case. Culture means to read, to comprehend, to be able to see, and to make sense of what you see, to think and to educate the mind".

and:

"If a nation possessing no art can be conceived of, one of its vital vessels is cut off".

"The great current ideas of the world that provided the independence of the world’s principal nations are opposed to individuals who try to find administrative solutions within rotten systems". (1923)

and:

"We mean, in a summary, the work of a society in cultural life, economical life and state life is civilization nothing else". (Atatürk, 1929)

The Triangle Project will next go to New York and Governors Island

The above movie is about the vision to create Tolerance Park on Governors Island. The Triangle Project of course supports this intent.

Personal and Individual Activism

There has been too many examples of a population who have just let things happen to their country, not taking any action against what they know is wrong. Responsibility should be taken by every single person and it is your obligation as a citizen to say NO! if you do not agree what is going on with your country. This store front in Copenhagen is a wonderful example of someone taking a stand and showing that it is NOT OK to steal the country and values away from its people, by populist propaganda and Fear Tactics. It is YOUR responsibility to say NO, when you can and if possible make a statement with art, music, conversation, letters, demonstrations and any other way you can think of.

The above window was found in Copenhagen's Østerbro District. Nice one!

Romeo Vidner has of course designed the Triangle Project Poster for the Part 2, that will take place in Copenhagen and Malmö between the 3rd and the 9th of April.

20 Artists from Istanbul are now on their way to the Øresundsregion ready to interact with their friends and collaborators.

bodig & ART ON STAGE presents:
lucy

20 March – 20 April 2008

a cross-disciplinary exhibition at three sites for contemporary art, Istanbul

ura, studio live, platform garanti
exhibition – performances – workshop – meeting
lucy, the first collaboration between ART ON STAGE, founded with the mission to attract new followers in contemporary art and bodig, known for its projects questioning the relationship between new media technologies and the body; is inspired by the fluctuating inner world of a fastidious, bohemian, ecstatic, fragile, creative and powerful new generation.

21 March 2008, 19:30 at URA!

The exhibition invites this generation and their contemporaries to reunite with their imaginary friends, to confront their spontaneous decisions, to listen to and hum together non-existent melodies that linger in their heads, to participate in the primitive quality of the notion of time, and to go back home with one red apple after spending two hours at a vegetable market.

participating artists:

Phil Collins (UK), Beliz Demircioğlu (TR), Andre Gonçalves (PT), Ha za vu zu (TR), Ana Husman (HR), Sara Nuytemans (NL), Oliver Pietsch (DE), Rudolfo Quintas (PT)

lucy exhibition co-curated by Derya Demir and Aylin Kalem.

20 March 2008, 21:30 at Studio Live

During the exhibition, on the last date when night is longer than day, artists Rudolfo Quintas and Andre Gonçalves invite viewers with their lighters and matches to an interactive sound performance, 'burning sound' they are going to perform at Studio-Live. In their performance the artists analyze the contemporary strategies of invisible control, using fire.

The event will begin with a performance by one of the most innovative composers in Turkey, performance artist and sound designer Tolga Tüzün (TR) and before 'burning the sound' Bisnov Project (TR) will present a performance featuring processed real-time images of the physical body. After 'burning the sound', the night will conclude with Diana Combo's (PT) performance where she is going to try to make everyone hear and believe that brand new spots and lines appear on her records every time they are listened to, by burning them, breaking them and gluing the pieces back together.

performance artists:

Tolga Tüzün (TR), Ururu (TR), Rudolfo Quintas & André Gonçalves (PT), Diana Combo (PT)

22nd March 2008, 18:00 at Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center

Artists Sara Nuytemans and Rudolfo Quintas speak on how they turn their imaginary worlds into reality using media technologies. Andre Gonçalves will go one step further by organizing a one-day long arduino* workshop. ( *arduino: is an open source electronic prototyping device for creating interactive objects and environments.)

BABA ZULA IN COPENHAGEN FOR THE TRIANGLE PROJECT PART 2

BABA ZULA

Founded in Istanbul in 1996, Baba Zula feautures founding members Levent Akman (percussion, rhythm machines, toys), Murat Ertel (saz and other strings, vocal), as well as darbuka player Coşar Kamçı who replaced original member Emre Onel in 2005. BaBa Zula added live drawing artist Ceren Oykut into the mix in 2004. Her presence onstage has added an important visual aspect to BaBa Zula's live performances.

Baba Zula go to great lengths to provide their fans with a unique live show experience. Their ritual like performances are a mixture of disciplines of art, often featuring belly dancers, elaborate costumes, poetry, theatre and live animation, delivering viewers a tantalizing audio-visual feast.

By mixing oriental instruments such as the darbuka, electric saz, and spoons with electronics and modern sounds, BaBa Zula creates a sound all their own called "Oriental Dub". While a ney can represent the past Sufi-Islamic tradition, and a clarinet is the symbol of the music of the Turkish gypsies-an electric saz together with a wooden spoon can serve as musical compass to Turkish musical roots going as far back as pre-Islamic, shamanic times, through Anatolia reaches all the way up to present-day Istanbul.Despite sounds that might initially come to mind when one hears the phrase "Oriental Dub", Baba Zula's music is in fact rock'n roll that rolls in a way that westerners haven't heard since the late '60s rock epoch. Baba Zula share their legacy with us through their music, a music born out of Istanbul and influenced by the memories of Istanbul passed on to them from generations past.

Baba Zula will play at INKONST in Malmö/Sweden on April 5th 2008, as part of The Triangle Project

The Egyptian Lover

Los Angeles-based producer Greg Broussard was the man behind pioneering hip-hop/electro fusion artist the Egyptian Lover. Comparable in influence to Soul Sonic Force's "Planet Rock", Man Parrish's "Hip-Hop Be Bop (Don't Stop)" and Pretty Tony's "Jam theBox", Egyptian Lover singles such as "Egypt, Egypt", "My Beat Goes Boom", "Dance" and "What is a DJ If He Can't Scratch?" combined the abstract electronics of Kraftwerk and the Art of Noise with the emerging beat-heavy sound of electro and the vocal approach of rap.

Similar in style and feel to those other artists, Egyptian Lover and related West Coast electro groups and producers such as World Class Wrecking Cru, Chris "The Glove" Taylor and the Unknown DJ took beatbox manipulation to new levels, fusing signature loops with ample syncopation, darker, modal melodies and impressive turntable tricks. While Egyptian Lover records didn't start appearing until several years after the New York and Miami electro scenes were already in full swing, by the mid-'80s Egyptian Lover cuts like Egypt, Egypt" were standards among club DJs, particularly in the breakdance scene.

On April 9th The Egyptian Lover will play at RUST in Copenhagen.
An Old School DJ crew from The Triangle Project will also be part of the night, singing "Egypt, Egypt" to themselves, just like they did when they first heard it with their still rather pure ears ...

ISTANBUL'S "ASHURA" PERFORMANCE TO MALMÖ'S INKONST IN APRIL 2008

In connection with The Triangle Project collaboration with INKONST on April 5th, there will also be a performance at Inkonst's theater space.

Dressed in simple black attire, they roam on the stage, lost and alien, through the fragile borders of a labyrinth of bottles, accompanied only by age-old restlessness and by ancient chants.
Ashura puts on stage the relationship with the “other”, the neighbour, aggressiveness, the domination of cultures, the adventure of exile, the tragedy of migration. It is the story of Anatolia, a region in Turkey that was once multi-lingual and multi-culture, where the large monotheist religions cohabited, met and clashed: a 20th century land reduced to socio-cultural standardisation.

But what makes this “stage concert” exciting is how Mustafa and Ovül Avkıran have succeeded in creating a meta-historical narration by bringing together traditional dance with gleanings of contemporary theatre, ritual movements with demographical statistics, sacred voices with profane uttering. Harmonising the whole with music: songs whose common denominators are the rhythmsand modes of folklore, but from which chants in Copt, Armenian, Hebrew, Zazaki, Turkish, Kurd and Greek rise, thanks to perfectly pitched voices that are very different in terms of style, like those of Sema and Harun Ates, the famous Turkish contralto.

“Ashura” is the dish Noah prepared after the deluge. For various reasons, the day of the Ashura is a religious recurrence for Jews and Muslims, for Armenians and Zoroastrians. “Its name is as old as the history of man,” Avkıran explains. “It comes from the past to show us that the routes of exile are today on the move”.

Mustafa Avkiran was born in 1963 and is a theatre director and actor.

Ovül Avkiran was born in 1971 and is a choreographer, dancer and actress. In 1995 they established 5.Sokak Tiyatrosu (Theatre of the fifth street) that is today one of the most acclaimed Turkish companies on the international scene. 5.Sokak Tiyatrosu is the founder of “garajistanbul”, a newly established contemporary performing centre in Istanbul.

The Danish-Argentinean artist couple Thyra Hilden & Pio Diaz destabilize European cultural history by setting buildings and monuments on fire.

The duo set the monuments of western cultural history on fire in their joint and ongoing video project “City on Fire.” With their seductive and spectacular artistic gesture, they reveal the fragile and transitory nature of these man-made constructions, and thereby destabilize prevailing order. The old monuments serve as weighty expressions for western culture and identity, and have to a certain extent functioned as templates for later constructions in cultural history. As such they constitute a physical foundation for western self-understanding, which the two artists unpack and recast in their edgy work.

City on Fire first came into being in 2005 when artists Thyra Hilden and Pio Diaz created their first installations in Rome. From the outset, it was the artists´ intention to re-create the installation at other venues of great symbolic significance in the Western world. Still, the symbolic value of Rome as the first site was particularly important to Hilden and Diaz.

Aesthetic manifest

The subtitle of the project is ‘Burning the Roots of Western Culture’ and even if City on Fire is not a political instrument – rather it is an aesthetic manifest – the very substance of the work holds the desire to highlight the roots of Western culture and the destruction connected with it. A destruction that we still witness today.

DANISH BASTARDS!

OR "DANSK JÄVLAR" ACCORDING TO BO NILSSON

In the end of each episode of Lars von Triers classic "The Kingdom" TV series, the Swedish actor Ernst Hugo Järegård (may he rest in peace) goes up on the roof of The Kingdom. The Kingdom (Riget in Danish) is Denmark's biggest hospital on the edge of Copenhagen and through his binoculars looks over at his beloved Sweden and screams "DANSK JÄVLAR". Dansk Jävlar means Danish Bastards and pretty much is head on for what the Swedes think of the kingdom of Denmark these days. The list of issues the Swedes have with the Danes until now is a very long one. It all started back in the days when Christian "The Good" II went to Stockholm and produced the huge drama in The Bloodbath of Stockholm. Basically he chopped the head off anyone that did not like him. After that the Swedes called him Christian "The Tyrant" II. A while after that Sweden broke loose from Denmark and became the bigger country with hardworking people who's drinking habits became regulated by the government because there was just to many accidents in the growing industrial nation. Meanwhile in Denmark, drinking was rather open and the brewery that made most money out of the Danes drinking habits, donated large amounts of money to the arts, by for example building "Glyptoteket" exhibiting classical art and Egyptian mummies. While Denmark was occupied by Hitler during the 2nd World War, the Swedes were neutral supporting him with huge amounts of iron for building weapons from their great mines in the north. The Swedish producer of bombs, made his own healing project by creating the Nobel Prize.

Then came many years of good times between the peaceful countries and they both flourished. The Swedes loved going to the happy go lucky little kingdom of Denmark to get drunk and buy cheap food and alcohol with their stronger currency. The Danes could really care less about Sweden, because when the Danes leave their kingdom, they would rather go south to get some sun, than going north to get even colder and being around the Swedes.
Sweden has always been a little better than Denmark and the Swedes truly feel this. The Danes have a bit of a little brother complex, and it has only gotten worse lately when Swedish music, fashion, film and literature have surpassed them by far.

The world changed Post 911, and so did Denmark. The country that used to be so cozy and "hyggeligt" was not so cute anymore. The very overly political correct Swedes cringe over what goes on in the kingdom these days. Not that they don't have problems with their immigrants and such, but at least they don't air their dirty laundry the way the Danes do. They are just to well behaved to do that. And then there was the crazy Danish soccer fan who attacked the referee during a game between Denmark and Sweden with 10 beers in his body, that cemented the Swedes perspective on the Danes.

The former art critic and current director of the Danish Royal Exhibition Space Charlottenborg Bo Nilsson, does not only have the same dialect as Ernst Hugo Järegård, he also has a slight resemblance to him. In his first exhibition at Charlottenborg, he is exhibiting the usual suspects of the current Danish art scene. However, one might wonder if he while being the Big Cheese in the Danish Royal Exhibition Space exhibiting what these silly Danes call art, that he every night after a hectic day with the union-declared coffee and smoke breaks every 60 minutes, goes up on the roof and looks over to his beloved Sweden and it's nuclear plant Barsebäck screaming "Dansk Jävlar!".

Is he just exhibiting them as a joke?
Is he pulling an "Entarte Kunst" move on the Danes, ridiculing their national treasures saying: Look at this crap! This is what they call contemporary art in this stupid little country.

HEIDI MORTENSON AND PEACHES CALLING LONDON IN BERLIN

When Danish Heidi Mortenson performed in Istanbul during The Triangle Project, she blew most people's mind. The old school New York DJ Johan Afterglow came up to me and said that after seeing Heidi perform live, the concept of performing had a new meaning to him. Basically Heidi intimidated many of the ego tripping young artists, but also gave them huge respect for her and made them perform even better. Heidi Mortenson is of great inspiration to anyone out there on the club scene, and not only women. Off stage she is almost invisible, but once she goes on stage her artist persona explodes, even if it seemed like she was holding back her full fledged Berlin edge. Heidi performs regularly all over Berlin, both with her live act (including human beatbox and scratch) and with a DJ set.
On the 7th of December she will be performing together with Peaches. The big difference between Peaches and Heidi is that Heidi has not been given the respect and mainstream appreciation that Peaches has. But staying underground in the streets of Berlin, not playing the sex card, will keep it real...and Heidi is keeping it real.

WORDS OF WISDOM TO THE HUMAN BEINGS

The Desteni Universe web site is a place where you can hear JFK talk about why he got shot, why Britney Spears is bald and how happy George Harrison still is for being able to create the music he did when he was alive...all channeled to this lovely young woman sitting in a room somewhere in South Africa. Basically she has the answers to all questions you might have, in entertaining and intense speeches by all kinds of people and historical figures, concepts, systems and thought constructs.
Open up and let it in.

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN ARE SLIGHTLY PROUD TO PRESENT 672,000 PAGES OF USELESS INFORMATION
(That's not including the 42.000 pages of mostly useless cover material).

Bitshslap Magazine is releasing yet another issue of useless information.
Or as Nick put's it:
"That's right, if you can put 2+2 together you'll realize we've really had our heads down and hands on the absinthe bottle for this issue. We're pretty much knocking out 100 pages of glory this time and have upped the distribution to a whopping 7000 within the inner streets of Copenhagen, which includes the few brave travellers that are to be found in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Vancouver, Sydney, Wellington and a few hundred over in Århus. We get a few web reads too, thanks to those poor bastards that can't get hold of a hard-copy."

Bitchslap magazine was created by a couple of immigrants were bored in winter, thought the grumpy danes were funny, and decided to dedicate 300 shitty, hand cropped, blood smeared, home printered substitutes for toilet paper to taking the piss.

www.Artrebels.com are online...and what is Artrebels?

ArtRebels is a Cph-based creative community for designers, DJs, artist, musicians, VJs, filmmakers and other creative souls.
ArtRebels is a movement, a business, a network, a shop and a way of life.
There is also HeartRebels:
HeartRebels represents the value of the others, the appreciation of difference, diversity and culture. It aims to establish a foundation for cooperation and sharing. By giving focus to people and matters that have been marginalised, discriminated or excluded, it aspirates to uplift and create opportunities. HeartRebels go beyond borders and seeks to break down boundaries that prevent people from working together, inspire each other, teach and help each other. It recognises the impediments that exists within systems settled by political conviction, mostly dominated by neo-liberal tendencies. Its will is to disregard any form of disparity and make inclusion one of the cornerstones of its framework.

HeartRebels accentuate that cooperation beyond religion, tradition, culture and gender, is essential to emphasise to prevent unnecessary infringements. Infringements which have taken place too long in our, as well as the world society.

LYDIA LUNCH

The only way to define the art of Lydia Lunch is simply not to.

Legendary old school performance artist from The New York Underground will take on the stage of Dogzstar in Istanbul, where most artists in The Triangle Project also performed on in September.

Hailed by the Boston Phoenix as "one of the 10 most influential performers of the 90's", no other artist of the 20th century has fought, forged, punched, and sculpted their own artistic vision in such a uniquely original way. Defying categorization, Lydia Lunch actively has conquered new territories, and has gained international recognition for the innovative quality of her work.

Through music, books, spoken word performances, film, video, photography, poetry and a multitude of creative endeavors, Lydia Lunch has proven to be one of the most interesting and daring artists of the current era. While many others of her generation have dissolved into the trappings of commercialism, her artistic vision has, through the years, been strengthened, redefined, and focused into an expression uniquely her own.

Baptized as a confrontationalist, Lydia Lunch commenced at age 16 as primal screamer and guitar guerrilla for the seminal "no-wave" band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks (1976). In early 1978, artist and producer Brian Eno attended a series of shows put on to benefit the Artist's Space in Soho and influenced Island Records to finance an anthology LP featuring the four strongest bands- Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, The Contortions, Mars and DNA. The resulting recording, entitled No New York and produced by Eno, remains as one of the most impressive — and extraordinarily bold — debuts of the time.

Simultaneous to Teenage Jesus, Lunch formed Beirut Slump, released one single and recorded an album's worth of material. Her solo debut, 1980's Queen of Siam, proved to be one of her most acclaimed efforts, influencing an entire generation of underground bands and artists. Flavored with a big-band cabaret sound provided by The Billy Ver Plank Orchestra, featuring sophisticated arrangements by Ver Plank himself, and an appearance by noted guitarist Robert Quine, the album proved that Lunch could embark in new directions and succeed.

Also a critical success and favorite of the New York rock reviewers, her next band, 8 Eyed Spy brought Lunch into a more traditional rock format. After 1982's 13.13, which featured former members of the Weirdos, Lunch began a series of collaborations, working with Nick Cave and The Birthday Party on the EP The Agony Is the Ecstasy, as well as Einsturzende Neubauten, Die Haut, Sort Sol, The Swans' Michael Gira, Marc Almond, and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.

THE FUTURE OF PERFORMANCE ART (?)

Cyprus-born Stelios Arcadiou, known as Stelarc, is an Australian-based performance artist whose work “explores and extends the concept of the body and its relationship with technology through human-machine interfaces incorporating medical imaging, prosthetics, robotics, VR systems and the internet.”

He recently generated quite a controversy after having an ear grafted onto his forearm in the name of art. He said that his extra ear, made of human cartilage, is an augmentation of the body's form. Some surgeons questioned whether such an operation should have been carried out, given the absence of clinical need while some patients who had similar surgery to correct a birth defect said she found the artist's work offensive.

The blending of art and science is highly praised by the Raelians as the message given to Rael by his alien friends clearly state that all life forms were created by human beings who combined their advanced genetic understanding with a high artistic sense.
“If life had been created by scientists only, it would be functional and grey” said Rael in one of his recent addresses to students. This is unfortunately perfectly illustrated by the comments of these surgeons from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons who are questioning the ethics of the operation, arguing that operations should only be performed for “obvious clinical or psychological benefits”.
Well one might ask; an ear on the arm...is that a earm?

http://avisen.dk/alliance-billig-musik-nettet

MACHINE CLUB
Grand Opening of new club in Istanbul

In a mail from The Triangle Projects New York and Istanbul friend Stephen Riolo
"I'll be in Istanbul tomorrow helping out with the opening of machine club (this saturday the 13'th @ balo sok.31/b beyoglu.) I'm also coming to feel out the possibilities of facilitating Queeruption '09 in istanbul. Soti and I have just been in NYC for my mom's 50'th b-day. Also had the chance to visit out a ton galleries, museums and project spaces. I'd love to see what's been going on in the istanbul arts scene post-biennale.

I'm crashing on a friend floor in cihanger, but it sounds pretty packed with club folks. If any one has an empty bedroom or sofa (and a shower) please hook me up. Soti's space in Athens is being renovated as we're developing it into a live-in arts salon space, with a cultural event series (films, talks, performances.) It all begins in the new year near Omonia!"

Stephen is also friends with Copenhagen based Miss Fish

MASH UP CULTURE
from wired

You may not know the "Amen Brother" drum loop by name, but you've heard it hundreds or thousands of times. The following video, which should be required viewing for anyone interested in sampling, copyright, and culture, traces the so-called "amen break" from its original recording in 1969 through hip hop, jungle, IDM, advertising, a site that only plays songs created using it, and finally a company called Zero G, which sells the break -- the copyright of which is not enforced by its owners -- on a copyrighted CD.
The video lasts over 18 minutes (which is like three YouTube eternities), but its tale of a six-second drum break creating an entire subculture is engaging and informative, and contains a great lesson about how the expansion of copyright laws is hurting our culture

KARGOLOGY
About KARGO
Development:

Since 2003, Bella Angora, Christian Falsnaes and So:ren Berner have been carrying out a number of different projects under the common name „KARGO“ next to their individual artistic practices, primarily in the fields of performance, installation and graffiti/public space interventions.
KARGO is an ongoing investigation of the possibilities of performance in contemporary art contexts within the frame ofcollaboration experiments. Through an open exchange of ideas and experiences, KARGO aims at an unpretentious and entertaining, but still diverse and complex, approach to different themes.
Most of their projects have dealt with social/cognitive norms, patterns and structures as well as the conscious decision to question these. In the process of such investigations, KARGO is sampling music, video, public happenings,
graffiti and musical-style-shows with references to philosophy, art history and contemporary culture.
Subliminal massages:

Powerpoint presentation:

The experiments and the investigative nature of the process is an important part of the KARGO performance projects.
Not to be afraid to fail, to look stupid or to reveal mistakes.

The performance/public space project KARGOLOGY is an investigation of information patterns in
public space as well as the ways individual people experience the constant flow of information in the city.
KARGO have been taking their starting point in the idea of an information free utopia. What if the city would be wiped clean over night?

It would be an impossible task to delete all information, but the group have used one whole week in Vienna to delete as much information as possible, simply by painting signs, shops, commercials, pictograms, posters and maps white on their way. They have been painting white as an attempt to create a clean, open, free space.
A public white cube. A space where every person in the city is free to insert his or her own information. KARGO has no intention of asserting a theory regarding the subject though. The project is more about
carrying out an experiment and let the public react. Documentation of the experiment will be presented along with thoughts on the subject in a one hour long performance with live music and video projections.

Red and White plaid:

Ahmet from The Hall in Istanbul said:
"If we call ourselves "artist", then as Kargology put it "Being artists its
not an easy thing. Our mission should shake the society and make them question
themselves. So artists should have a statement."

We all loved their braveness, statements, and questioning attidute as a
artist".
